We have no company . We live in Lexington County in S.C. and the sherrif and his group of ( smiling and profiling ) are the pits. We called them when someone was stopped in the middle of my dirt road passed out with the radio blasting and a pistol in his lap . I called a total of 3 times and it took them about 45 minutes to get there , by this time he had come to and drove off. BTW the sub station is less than 3 miles from the house.

Monitronics - very good. Right after installation, my wife accidentally tripped the alarm. They called in about 1 minute to check on us.
Wife also forgot the safety code....
Local police where here in about 3 minutes....luckily, we did not get charged for a false alarm.
Previously, we had ADT in Michigan. They were very good as well. My father in law tripped the alarm housesitting for us one summer. He left our home to let our dogs out and did not hear/answer the check call from ADT. Again, local police were there in about 3 minutes and, again, luckily we did not get charged for a false alarm.

I had ADT, too many false alarms with a small dog that they supposedly adjusted it for.
Not happy.

Brinks and very good.
We have window and door alarms, interior we have a detector that looks for motion and body heat. Heat by itself and motion my itself will not set it of. ( ie if you left the ceiling fan on or a party balloon as floating around, or a space heater) Together it will set off the alarm, as well as a monitored smoke head.
Any of the above will cause Brinks to call the police and me or my brother to alert us to problems.

ADT -- I'm pleased with the customer service, but I'm not so keen on the response time.
I have a story for you: Early, early Christmas morning (about 4:30 a.m.) my alarm went off... "dee do, dee do, woo woo, dee woo," etc. I jumped up out of bed and immediately went for my 9mm... "Chick-Chick," as loud as I could down the hall to discourage any BG lurking, y'know. I started to clear my house with my wife right behind me with the phone. Flicking on lights, room to room, checking out windows and such. -- One strange thing, though, my dog was not allerting at all. Usually she's barking her head off, but she was just staring at me with this strange look on her face, like... what's that sound? -- Anyway, I make my way to the door leading into my den, and I notice that the door is cracked open... OK, I prepare myself; this must be it. I open the door, turn on the lights and... there's no one there. I check the French Doors (the weakest part of my house), and everything is still double locked. Then ADT calls. What? Why so late? After I go through the whole house, then ADT calls. That was way too long for me. I turned off the alarm, and my wife just talked to them. OK, so nothing happened. I got the inside door to the den installed with an alarm even though it's inside the house because I wanted to get that area "double" covered -- the French Doors are in there and if a break in happens, I'm sure that's where it's going to be. Anyway, it appears that the air circulating through the house opened the door and set off the alarm, and... I am not pleased with their response time; at least, not in this setting. Now, I don't know how long it was from the initial alarm to the time of the call, but I just felt it was too long. _________________ "Molon Labe" -- Leonidas, King of Sparta

I would relate my displeasure to ADT ASAP! You pay for a service and want it done in a timely manner. Quick question, why did your wife follow you with the phone?

I don't know why my wife just had a phone. I mean, I have more than one firearm in the house, but she wanted to help me clear the house and call 911 if necesary. I know that we probably have to improve our reactionary procedures, but I'm retired military and she's still on active duty. We're just two agressive type-A personalities clearing out the house to see what's up... why the alarm when off -- More offensive minded than defensive minded, I guess.
Anyway, you're right. I need to call ADT and do a good test of all the alarms too. _________________ "Molon Labe" -- Leonidas, King of Sparta

If your wife is not armed then I hate to say she is a liability, if shots are fired at you there is a chance she could be hit, then you have to try to remove her from the kill zone while trying to return fire.

So I got a call from ADT... my "garage" alarm was alerting. Probably same scenario as above, but who knows. I don't have a garage, but French doors. I went home and met the police there. They had already checked out the perimeter and did not find anything (no broken windows, etc.). It did appear that my French doors were pushed in, though. Great, I knew this was going to happen. Those doors are going to be the death of me... as the weakest point in my house. It looks like the outside plastic molding was pushed in but the inside top and floor bolt locks worked. Still, the alarm was triggered.
Good for ADT. It did what it was suppose to do... scare the BGs away, notify me, and call the police. Now, I don't know what their response time was, but it worked.
But, we all know the deal. Just because the BGs were scared away once doesn't mean it won't happen again. I need to come up with something to fix those doors. I'm going to order one of those door braces or something today.

Most of your local phone companies should also have a home security service they can provide you with as well. Something to check into. They dont cost as much as your avertised companies but provide the same security devices and services as the big boys. I just had mine installed by my phone company about 2 weeks ago. 2 doors, 9 windows , and no motion sensors ( cats ) cost me $320.00 installed in about 3 hours. If the alarm goes off the screen by my bed shows me which entry point is in question, I get a phone call from the sevice within 60 seconds, it also includes specialized buttons on the console to call the fire department, Ambulance sevice, or a direct line to the police dept. Monthly cost ? 14 bucks =)

Brinks and I am satisfied. My daughter recently set off the system by accident one afternoon. They called us in 35 seconds.

I hope all you guys are not just relying on the alarm as per my previous job if someone knows what there doing such as myself I could render an alarm useless in less than 1 minute I will not reveal how its done but if someone really wanted to get into your house and knew what they were doing your alarm is useless _________________ General George Patton Jr.

Yes and No,
Older alarm systems, Yes.
But the newer alarms with battery back-up, cell dialers and redundant coverage overlap is good enough to give you some early warning to your common and semi-advanced bad guy.
Nothing is 100% but why make it easy on them.

Hey there I live in Estill Co. Nice to see a fellow Ky member.
I am also looking into home security for when I am away. I live way out in the country and response time is slow. 15 mins or more at best. So I am looking into something to alert police. But I am also looking into a second self installed system that does recording. I was recentally broken into and over $45,000 worth of stuff was taken. I am a mechanic so tools and weapons was a big chunk of this. Unfortunatly at the time i didn't have insurance. But I do now (lesson learned the hard way). I am going to check in with my local phone provider and see if they offer this service.
